Uche Sparks Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European campaign, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Missing star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable win that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, especially following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This occasion provided a platform for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season were outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Dominance Established from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
